Andy responded quickly to our message and arrived when he said he would on Sunday to try to fix our door. Due to age and trickiness (we have had a few people to tend to it over the years)he had to return today. He arrived at the time he said he would and persevered patiently with our tricky door, replacing the lock mechanism and working on the door so that it opens better now than when it was first fitted a good few years ago. A lot of clients ask me this. We recommend changing the locks if there is any way that someone could connect your keys to your home or car. If your lost set of keys also has a key fob that makes your car beep, intruders could potentially identify your home by driving down the street and hitting the clicker until something makes a noise. If you lost your keys away from home and there’s no way of linking them back to you, you may consider just cutting new keys instead.

Are Locksmiths Regulated in the UK?
Locksmiths in the U.K. do not need to be regulated in order to legally operate as a locksmith. This may come as a surprise to many people as in many countries, such as America, locksmiths require a licence in order to work. But no, unlike the finance industry for example, who need to be FCA regulated, there is no such regulation for locksmiths. It’s a worrying thought that, in fact, the person who is copying your keys for your house or car is not required by law to hold any licence or criminal record check. This makes it even more essential that you check the locksmith you choose to use properly.

How to check your locksmith is legitimate?

One method which is easy to do is to check the google reviews of a locksmith. A professional locksmith should have at least a couple of reviews on google, which are hopefully positive. If you see a locksmith that doesn’t have a google map listing, then alarm bells should be ringing, why is this?
Google maps is a free business listing service in which people can use to leave the locksmith reviews. These listing can generate a lot of work for locksmiths and all for free. One has to wonder why a locksmith would not wish to use this service. One reason could be so that people cannot leave them bad reviews.
Now this doesn’t mean that anyone without a google map listing is bad. But you should use extra caution and research a little deeper than usual in these cases. Please note, many old timer locksmiths are not very computer savy, and this can be the reason that they don’t have a google map listing. In these cases try and ask around a few of your friends to see if you have heard of them. Another option is to check to see if the locksmith has the address of there business on there website. If there is no address, this should raise suspicions.

Check Locksmiths Reviews From Various Sources

Checking reviews from other platforms aside from google can also prove useful. For example the Yell.com website or even trustpilot are great places to check the reviews of a locksmith. Now unfortunately in this day and age, almost every business has at least some bad reviews, you can’t please everybody after all. So don’t let this fully put you off. After all, you have to choose somebody. Check to see that the locksmith has mostly good reviews, if so then that’s ok. Everyone has a rare bad day in which they may have upset a customer, however if there’s only a couple of negative reviews, then this is clearly not the norm.

Also check to see if the account which has left the negative reviews is actually real. You can see if this person has left reviews for other businesses in the area also. If the account shows that they have only ever left 1 or 2 reviews, then its highly likely this is a fake account used to try and discredit the locksmith. Why would anyone do this you ask? Well, the locksmith industry is highly competitive and it is not unknown for other locksmiths to try and ruin the reputation of their competition, as opposed to beating them by providing a better service.

If locksmiths are regulated, then how to become a locksmith?

An interesting question. If there is no official training or test then how to people know how to become a locksmith. Well here’s the interesting part. Most people, in this day and age, aren’t actually locksmiths. Officially the term ‘locksmith’ is hundreds of years old and essentially means somebody who creates locks by forging them with molten metal. Locksmiths certainly don’t do this anymore. Now the term is used to describe people who can pick locks and gain entry to your home when the keys are lost. Some locksmiths do UPVC door repair and even window repair. This is very different from what the role used to be in the past.

So essentially, nobody is a locksmith, instead we should be called ‘lock pickers’ or perhaps just ‘door and lock repair guys’, as we certainly don’t make locks anymore. Ok so how does one become a ‘door repair guy then. Well there are various training courses provided by private companies both online and offline in the art of locksmithing. These courses can provide the student with a good foundation on how to be a locksmith, and often have some sort of test or exam at the end. This can get a new locksmith off to a great start, however there is no course which teaches everything.

The majority of the learning is via on the job learning, by figuring it out in the real world and making mistakes. Locksmiths often have small circles of friends which contain other locksmiths. Many locksmiths learn simply by asking questions to the other locksmiths and learning from them. Often locksmiths send each other training tips and videos via whatsapp to help each other. Just last week Lemon Locksmith called another locksmith to ask which was the best Lishi pick to use in order to open a car in a lost keys situation. In order to properly train as a locksmith, required a great amount of skill and patience. When people train to be a locksmith, it requires a lot of hard work in order to learn about the different locks and security methods.

Are there any regulations or guidelines to follow in the Locksmith Industry?

The short answer is: no. In theory, a locksmith can work however they want and follow or ignore whichever guideline they like, as long as they complete the job, whether that be gaining entry or a general door repair, then they do not care about how you do it. There are guidelines recommended by private teaching companies such as the Master Locksmith Associated and MPL training. These companies produce a good list of rules for locksmiths to follow. By locksmiths following these guidelines, you can rest assured that they are aiming to help both the customer and the locksmith.

Whenever you call a locksmith, why not ask them ”Are you MLA qualified?”. If so you will be able to check on the MLA website to confirm that this is true. In order for a locksmith to become an MLA member, they do have to pass a series of tests and abide by the MLA regulations. The master locksmith association ensures that a high standard is kept from their accredited locksmiths. In a way the MLA has its very own regulations for locksmiths to follow. However as it stands, at the moment, nobody has to be a member and can operate legally with no training or qualifications, so watch out. Some of the rules from the MLA rulebook are that the locksmith must be DBS / police checked for prior criminal record. They check this all for you prior to you using them.

Seen as the MLA have 4 separate tests which must be passed before they approve a locksmith onto their list, you can be sure they are a qualified locksmith. It takes a great deal of practice to pass all four parts of the exam, something which cannot be cheated. It’s worth bearing in mind that the MLA are a private organization and as yet are not government approved in any way. However in our opinion, the MLA is the closest thing the locksmith industry has towards a governing body of locksmiths and are seen by many as the authority in this area. Remember, unlike for example in the finance industry, who would have FCA approved companies, there is no such requirement in the U.K.

What about regulations for Locksmiths outside of the UK?

This opens up a mirage of questions but generally the answer is: Yes. Most countries, including the U.S. require that their locksmiths are licenced. It really does seem to be that the U.K. is the odd one out by not requiring this. In the U.S. there is an organization called the ALOA. The is the Association Of Locksmiths America and this is essentially the American version of the MLA. This is a type of regulatory body which vets and checks the locksmiths there. As with most regulatory bodies, there are a range of checks and skills which are tested before a locksmith can join. The ALOA is a large authority compared to the MLA, however seen as America is much larger, this is to be expected. Only ALOA approved locksmiths can feature on their website and can be searched for by the user. The search bar on the ALOA site can be used to check a company is really an authorized member. Only permitted members can be a member on the website.

It is important to to choose a locksmith which is endorsed by a reputable locksmith organisation. After all, a locksmith is someone who potentially has access to copy your keys which can be used to enter you home. Its the type of trade where you really should check who you are using prior to getting someone. Also when checking to see if a locksmith, or any trade for that matter, is a member of a locksmith organization, make sure that the organization itself is recognized. With other trade industries, this can be tricky. However with the locksmith trade this is relatively easy.

In the U.K. there is mainly only one such organization, the MLA. There are other smaller ones such as the UK Locksmith Association or the Accredited Locksmith Group however these are fairly small and not big players. There is even an organisation called the ICL otherwise known as the Institute of Certified Locksmiths, however this institute doesn’t seem very active any more, it seems to be all about the MLA. Remember, in the U.K. at least, there is no such thing as a locksmith licence, as there is no legal requirement for one. So the next best thing is to check they are a member of a reputable organization as the locksmithing industry is not regulated here.
